Motivations and common patterns

Each Enneagram type is defined not by behaviour alone, but by core motivation — what drives attention, shapes priorities, and influences responses.

  • The Improver Pattern

    Seeks to get things right by holding high standards and noticing what could be better.

    Internal Voice : “There’s a right way to do this - I should get it there.”

    Under Pressure : I become critical, impatient and overly judgemental.

  • The Connecting Pattern

    Moves toward other to feel valued, often anticipating needs before they’re expressed.

    Internal Voice : “If I’m needed, then I matter.”

    Under Pressure: I become people-pleasing, resentful and over-giving.

  • The Performing Pattern

    Focuses on success and forward momentum, adapting quickly to meet expectations.

    Internal Voice: “I need to keep achieving to stay valued.”

    Under Pressure: I become driven, image-conscious and a workaholic.

  • The Meaning-Seeking Pattern

    Looks for depth and authenticity, often drawn to what feels missing or different.

    Internal Voice : “Something important is missing - I need to find it.”

    Under Pressure: I become moody, envious, withdrawn.

  • The Withdrawing Pattern

    Pulls back to observe and understand, conserving energy and valuing independence.

    Internal Voice : I need to understand this before I engage.”

    Under Pressure : I become isolated, disengaged and overwhelmed.

  • The Questioning Pattern

    Scans for risk and uncertainty, seeking security through preparation and support.

    Internal Voice : What could go wrong - I need to be prepared.”

    Under Pressure: I become anxious, doubtful and overly cautious.

  • The Reframing Pattern

    Moves towards options and possibilities, avoiding limitation by keeping things open.

    Internal Voice : There must be a better option - I don’t want to feel stuck.”

    Under Pressure : I become scattered, impulsive and avoidant.

  • The Controlling Pattern

    Steps into take charge and stay strong, resisting vulnerability or loss of control.

    Internal Voice : “I need to stay in control so I don’t get hurt.”

    Under Pressure: I become domineering, confrontational and reactive.

  • The Merging Pattern

    Seeks ease and harmony, often going along to avoid conflict or disruption.

    Internal Voice : “It’s easier to go along than create tension.”

    Under Pressure: I become passive, indifferent and disengaged.
