Enneagram Subtypes & Instincts
Instincts
Where attention is directed
The Enneagram identifies three instinctual priorities that influence behaviour across all nine types:
Self-Preservation — focus on safety, wellbeing, and practical needs
Social — focus on belonging, roles, and contribution within groups
One-to-One (Sexual) — focus on intensity, connection, and shared energy
Each person expresses all three instincts, but typically one is dominant, shaping how their Enneagram type shows up in daily life and relationships.
Understanding instincts adds depth to type awareness and can be particularly helpful in communication and relational dynamics.
Subtypes
How the same type can look different
While each type has a shared core motivation, subtypes describe how that motivation is expressed in everyday life.
Subtypes reflect where attention most naturally goes and help explain why two people of the same type may look very different in behaviour, energy, or focus.
Understanding subtypes often brings relief, nuance, and clarity — especially for those who don’t immediately recognise themselves in broad type descriptions.
